Online casinos in North Carolina powered by regular real money aren’t currently permitted, unfortunately. But you can still play state-of-the-art slot games and other casino-style games at sweepstakes casinos, using virtual currencies instead of cash.
The best brands active in this popular sub-sector of gaming are Crown Coins Casino, Hello Millions, Jackpota, McLuck, and MegaBonanza. And in today’s guide, we’ll explore why. But ultimately, it’s because all five offer top-rated slots and other games that can be played with no upfront purchase requirement, in two exciting modes. Here’s everything you need to know.

Nope. As we mentioned already above, real money online casinos are off limits in the Tar Heel State right now, for the simple reason that the state hasn’t authorized - and doesn’t regulate - them yet.
If you’re looking to play top slots like Bison Gold, 3 Wild Sevens or Fireball Inferno online in NC legally, then, where does that leave you? Well, we’d say your next best choice is to try out sweepstakes casinos. These are virtual currency powered gaming sites that offer Vegas-style games to players on a no purchase necessary basis.
These sites are widely available in NC at the time of writing. Players in Virginia enjoy the same sweepstakes format, too. As do players based in SD, UT and other parts of the US where real money casinos are not available. But before we unpack our favorite sweepstakes casinos in North Carolina right now, let’s take a closer look at how these sites work, and the pros and cons of using them.
Sweepstakes casinos typically run on a two-tier virtual currency system, where you can play using either:
Ordinarily, this setup holds strong across all these sites’ permitted states - meaning the same sweepstakes model runs in Texas, or Arizona, as what you’ll also encounter when playing at sweepstakes casinos in NC.
But what other important play rules apply? Well, our sweepstakes casinos page runs through the basics in more detail. But it’s important to be aware that you can always play slots and other casino-style games with no upfront purchase requirement in the sweepstakes casino world. But if you do want more, Gold Coins are the only virtual currency that can be purchased. Sweeps Coins will always be given for free.
Last but not least, sweepstakes casino sites like Crown Coins Casino and Jackpota will usually throw in free SC bonuses whenever you opt into buying eligible GC bundles, too. Although SC themselves can never be purchased independently. While of course, these sites never offer any cash gameplay options, either - all games are powered by GC and SC only, and all winnings are credited as GC/SC, too.
Right now, there are quite a few sweepstakes casinos out there that accept players based in North Carolina. And the same goes in Ohio, another state where sweepstakes casinos are legal. But which sweepstakes casino sites are best for NC players?
Well, our favorites are Crown Coins Casino, Hello Millions, Jackpota, McLuck, and MegaBonanza on account of their competitive game selections, generous new customer bonuses and cool site-specific features.
Here’s a glance at how the five brands compare:
| Sweepstakes casino | Number / type of games available | No purchase necessary sign up bonus | Standout features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crown Coins Casino | 600+ slots, tables, live dealer and bingo games. | 100,000 Crown Coins (GC) + 2 SC. |
|
| Hello Millions | 1,500+ slots, table, card and arcade games. | 15,000 GC + 2.5 SC. |
|
| Jackpota | 1,200+ slots, table, live dealer and jackpot games. | 7,500 GC + 2.5 SC. |
|
| McLuck | 1,000+ slots, live dealer titles and game show games. | 7,500 GC + 2.5 SC. |
|
| MegaBonanza | 800+ slots, megaways, hold and win and other games. | 7,500 GC + 2.5 SC. |
|
So, Crown Coins Casino stands out with its generous welcome bonus, while Hello Millions offers more games, and Jackpota is great for jackpot-style promotions. But what else do these brands, as well as McLuck and MegaBonanza, currently have to offer to NC-based players? Well, here's a more in-depth look at each.
With a free to claim 100,000 Crown Coins (the brand’s version of GC) and 2 SC welcome bonus currently up for grabs, and more than 600 Vegas-style slots and other games to choose from, Crown Coins Casino has a lot going for it. And that includes access to top NetGaming slots, and games from dozens of other prominent providers, too.
The site also offers a very competitive optional first time GC purchase bonus - which will get you 1.5 million Crown Coins (GC) with 75 bonus SC when you spend $19.99. From there, purchasing an optional GC package pricing follows a similar minimum deposit structure to what you’ll find at other gaming sites, with the lowest-priced GC package available starting from just $1.99 at the time of writing.
The site scores big on brand reputation and customer support, too - with a 4.6-star average rating on TrustPilot, and 24/7 live chat available to all players.
Hello Millions serves up a game catalog comprising more than 1,500 individual titles, making it a great fit for players who value breadth of choice above all else. What’s more, between its NetGaming slots and fun table, card and arcade games, you’ll find several competitive bonuses here - including a free to claim 15,000 GC and 2.5 SC welcome pack, and daily reloads good for 5,000 GC and 2.5 SC once every 24 hours.
We were also impressed by Hello Millions’ abnormally low minimum SC redemption requirements, which currently sit at just 10 SC for gift cards, and 50 SC for cash prizes.
Jackpota offers its 1,200+ slots, megaways and - of course - jackpot-style games to players in more than 24 other US states, including NC. While everybody who registers here using our banner links on this page can currently claim a 7,500 GC and 2.5 SC bonus with the brand on signup, too. This isn’t the biggest bonus up for grabs with today’s shortlisted brands, of course, but it still packs a punch when combined with the site’s 1,500 GC and 0.20 SC daily bonus, random drops and other fun offers.
What stands out most about Jackpota, mind, is the site’s progressive jackpot promos - which are run site-wide regardless of what kinds of slots you’re playing. What’s more, we found that all the brand’s games are sourced from high-end developers, too, meaning excellent graphics and loading times across the board.
From Fireball Inferno and American Wonder Reels to Vegas Blitz and Zeus’ Thunderbolt 5,000, McLuck offers access to many top NetGaming slots in NC. But the site also offers one of the best selections of live dealer table games we’ve seen at any sweepstakes casino in the state, too.
Everybody gets a 7,500 GC and 2.5 SC welcome bonus that matches precisely up to Jackpota’s on signup, followed by daily reloads and other fun, free to claim bonuses afterwards. What’s more, the site offers a grand total of more than 1,000 games, including Vegas-style “Social Live Casino” tables like Gravity Blackjack and Auto Roulette.
The site’s great for offbeat game shows, too - with rare titles like Crash Live and Gravity Wheel also up for grabs to NC players at the time of writing.
Finally, MegaBonanza is a new sweepstakes casino that has tons to offer to players who enjoy faster-paced hold and win and megaway-style games like Shamrock Trio Hold N Respin and Gold Panther Maxways. While at the time of writing, there’s a competitive 7,500 GC and 2.5 SC free to claim welcome bonus available here, as well as a “150% extra” optional first GC purchase promo.
Additionally, MegaBonanza is one of just a small handful of sweepstakes casinos that offers dedicated apps for iOS and Android users right now, which currently hold impressive 4.8-star ratings on both the App Store and Google Play.
It’s unfortunate that real money online casinos remain off limits in North Carolina at the time of writing. But with so many competitive sweepstakes casinos to choose from in the state instead, there are plenty of worthwhile alternatives to try out - the best of which we currently rate as Crown Coins Casino, Hello Millions, Jackpota, McLuck and MegaBonanza, albeit for different reasons.
As it stands, we’re confident Crown Coins is the best sweepstakes casino for bonuses and all-round features. While Hello Millions shines brightest in terms of game range and breadth, Jackpota is our top pick for jackpot lovers, and McLuck is worth a look if you’re more into live dealer tables and game shows.
Last but not least, of course, MegaBonanza offers an unrivaled range of megaways and hold and win games, which is great for those of you who prefer faster-paced slot games over more conventional ones.
