Illinois is one of the US states where traditional gaming sites aren’t permitted. Therefore, if you’re looking for Illinois online casinos, you won’t find licensed options that support real money. However, there are sweepstakes casino alternatives.
Based on our research, sweepstakes casinos operate in the Prairie State using virtual currencies. On these sites, you can play different types of slots, among other casino-style games. What’s interesting is that you can also redeem real prizes if you meet the requirements. Read on as we discuss the best IL sweepstakes casinos and other important details to know.

No, they’re not at the moment. As we confirmed, Illinois hasn’t legalized online casinos, and there are no state-licensed sites that offer real money games. So, as a resident, you can’t wager USD to play slots.
In Illinois, the legal gambling options include sports betting and the lottery through regulated operators. With online sportsbooks permitted, IL may approve casino sites in the near future. However, nothing is certain, and there’s no confirmed timeline.
At an IL sweepstakes casino, you play slots and other games using virtual currencies. On most sites, there are two virtual currencies specifically, including Gold Coins (GC) and Sweepstakes Coins (SC), or their equivalent. The same goes for Massachusetts, another sweepstakes-friendly state we’ve reviewed.
Since they don’t allow playing with real money, sweepstakes casinos are available in Illinois. You can play slots with GC for fun and entertainment purposes. If you play with SC, you can redeem real prizes from the sites after meeting some conditions.
The top sweepstakes casinos we rank offer GC and SC through bonuses. There’s the option to buy Gold Coin packages and increase your balance, but it’s optional. Don’t mistake the GC package pricing for making a minimum deposit, as they’re entirely different. You’re only buying optional virtual currencies, not funding your sweepstakes casino account.
As we’ve explained, real money gaming sites are not an option in Illinois. Instead, this state relies on the sweepstakes model, and you can see our selection of sweepstakes casinos below:
CrownCoins is a sweepstakes site with a library of 700+ casino-style games. The bulk of the titles are online slots, and we were impressed to see several Crown’s Exclusives in the collection. These exclusives are customized and branded slots from different renowned software developers, like NetGaming.
In our CrownCoins review, we enjoyed playing Sweet Crowns, Coins of Olympus, Crown Jester Gold, and Queen of the Crown. If you join the site in Illinois, you can spin the reels with Crown Coins (CC), which are equivalent to Gold Coins. On the other hand, playing with Sweeps Coins makes you eligible for prize redemption.
CrownCoins welcomes all new players with a 100,000 CC + 2 SC welcome bonus. From our experience, you don’t need a promo code to claim the offer. After that, you can get more virtual currencies from the daily login rewards, missions, VIP program, and others.
Our best Illinois online casinos using the sweepstakes format all have sign-up bonuses for new players after registration. However, Hello Millions is our top choice in that area. The brand gives you a welcome offer of 15,000 Gold Coins and 2.5 Sweepstakes Coins once you create an account.
Hello Millions follows up with multiple first-purchase deals. If you decide to buy an optional GC package, you can get more virtual currencies at a relatively lower price. For example, we purchased a bundle of 50,000 GC (+ 25 free SC) for $9.99 instead of $24.99.
From what we saw in the lobby, you’ll appreciate Hello Millions if you’re a slot fan. Among the various mechanics available, the brand particularly caught our interest with the cascading reels category. After trying several titles, we recommend playing Magic Mummy Megaways, Ice Pop Party, Templar Tumble, and Coin Quest 2.
At Jackpota, you can opt into GC or SC jackpot prize pools as you play slot games. These jackpots are progressive with four tiers: Mini, Minor, Major, and Community. We checked and saw that the highest tier, Community, starts at 100 million GC and 100,000 SC. That’s not something you see on just any sweepstakes casino in Illinois.
We must emphasize that the jackpots on Jackpota are awarded randomly. Any player can hit one of the four prizes at any time during a session, and the pool resets after that. We opted into the jackpot with popular slots on the site, including Wild West Express, 12 Masks Fire Drums, and Bison Fire Charge.
As a new Jackpota player, expect 7,500 Gold Coins and 2.5 Sweepstakes Coins from the sign-up bonus. The promo offers some free virtual currencies to start playing the jackpot slots from the outset.
McLuck lets you redeem your Sweepstakes Coins for cash prizes or gift cards. This brand makes our list because it has low minimum redemption amounts compared to most other IL sweepstakes casinos. Having 75 SC is enough for a cash prize, and a gift card requires just 10 SC.
Importantly, you have to play with your SC at least once to be eligible for redemption on McLuck. That’s not a hassle, as the site is home to 1,500+ casino-style games. Our favorite slots to try are 3 Hot Chili Peppers, Bonanza Trillion, Alchemy Blast, and Laughing Buddha.
The McLuck welcome bonus gives you 2.5 SC and 7,500 GC after signing up. As you accumulate SC from other featured promotions, you can start playing towards real prize redemption. Outside of Illinois, players in Missouri enjoy the same sweepstakes format and friendly rules on McLuck. The same applies to other states where the site is active.
You may have friends who are also searching for Illinois online casinos. With real money options unavailable, your suggested alternatives will be sweepstakes sites. When you invite your friends to MegaBonanza, you qualify for a referral bonus of up to 130,000 Gold Coins and 65 Sweepstakes Coins.
Based on our observations, the bonus doesn’t drop at once. Instead, MegaBonanza will give you 30,000 GC and 15 SC if your friends purchase $30+ in GC packages. You receive the remaining 100,000 GC and 50 SC if the purchases reach $500+. That said, remember that it’s completely optional to buy a GC package.
MegaBonanza offers 7,500 GC and 2.5 SC after registration without an initial purchase. Also, on the site, we saw daily login rewards and a Loyalty Lounge with exclusive bonuses. Like other sites on this list, MegaBonanza has a wide slot selection. Captain Jack’s Voyage, Reel of Ra, and Coin Up Lightning are some of the best titles from our tests.
If you register with our top sweepstakes gaming sites, you can redeem SC for real prizes after satisfying these conditions:
Legit sweepstakes casinos will demand you verify your account before prize redemption. The main reason is to confirm you’re in Illinois or other permitted states, as the sites exclude a few locations. For instance, sweepstakes casinos usually don’t support Maine, Idaho, and Nevada.
Besides location, verification also proves your identity and age. From our experience, you can complete the process by uploading these documents:
| Process | Document |
|---|---|
| Proof of identity | Driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID |
| Proof of address | Utility bill or bank statement |
If real money Illinois online casinos become licensed, they’ll also require verification for all players. As such, this requirement is a general one that’s important for compliance.
Simply put, the playthrough indicates how many times you’ll play with your Sweepstakes Coins before redemption. Most sites we test set it at 1x, which means using your SC just once is sufficient.
You can play slots to complete the playthrough requirement, as they’re almost always eligible. The top sweepstakes casinos we rank have classic, Megaways, Hold & Win, and other popular titles in their library. Table games such as blackjack, roulette, and baccarat are also present.
You typically can’t submit a redemption request for 1 or 2 eligible SC. Instead, sweepstakes casinos often require at least 100 SC for cash prizes, although some sites like McLuck support 75 SC. If you’re redeeming a gift card, the minimum can be between 10 SC and 50 SC.
Here’s a look at the upsides and downsides of online casinos in Illinois:
Our guide has so far covered the important details to know about Illinois online casinos. In summary, real money sites aren’t licensed or permitted to operate in the Prairie State. Instead, sweepstakes casinos that use virtual currencies are allowed.
The appeal of sweepstakes casinos is that they offer free GC and SC through promos. Therefore, you don’t have to make an initial purchase to play on the sites. You can use your virtual currencies on several slot types as well as blackjack, roulette, and others. Not to mention, SC is redeemable for real prizes subject to a few requirements.
We’ve detailed the top five sweepstakes casinos to consider if you’re in Illinois. CrownCoins features multiple exclusive slots, and Hello Millions offers a generous welcome bonus. You can play jackpots on Jackpota and redeem real prizes with relative ease on McLuck. Then, there’s MegaBonanza with a commendable referral reward for inviting friends.
